With this sculpture, Antonin Mercié ambition was to renew the representation of this biblical episode recounting the victory of the young shepherd in his duel against the giant Goliath. To this end, he placed himself in the tradition of the great bronze sculptors of the Florentine Renaissance, notably Donatello and Verrocchio. The work is considered one of Mercié's most important pieces and is known for its realism and attention to detail. The statue may have been inspired by Michelangelo's famous marble statue of David, but it has a unique style that sets it apart.
