Commissioned by the Ministere de l'Interieur, this marble statue represents Marius standing on the ruins of Carthage, which is a city in Tunisia known for its ancient archaeological heritage. "Marius debout sur les ruines de Carthage" depicts Marius meditating on the inconstancy of fortune. It won the second prize for Grand Prix de Rome in 1837 and was then presented at the 1861 Paris Salon, and the Universal Exhibition in 1867.

Artist

Victor Vilain (1818-1899) is a French sculptor.
In 1834 he entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1837 he won the second Grand Prix de Rome, before being awarded the first prize the following year.
